The leadership of Interfaith San Antonio Alliance acknowledges we are living in an unprecedented time that calls on us to listen beyond our own understanding and not turn away from the desperate cries for justice. While it pains us to see our city in turmoil, we are equally distraught by the continued injustices against our African-American brothers and sisters. Though the grievous deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd are among the most recent, the list is far too long and we must act for the safety of all of God’s children.
We commend all who gathered and marched in San Antonio on May 30, 2020 to peacefully share their voices, their pain and their frustrations. Following the legacy of the faith community who led San Antonio in peaceful desegregation in the 1960’s, we call upon fellow faith leaders to lead the way in this time of national crisis. May we honor the work of San Antonio’s past leadership by prayerfully continuing to build bridges to earn one another’s trust. We must seek a new reality beyond this pandemic within a pandemic, too long experienced by people of color.
This is a time that requires deep reflection and genuine repentance by many, and lasting reconciliation for all. We must walk shoulder to shoulder to do the hard work of unity to realize a future where we are all free to live in the fullness of our God given potential.
